Per Tristan e Mary Lou, Londra è proprio come una prigione, e vittime sono proprio loro: due ragazzi adolescenti, incompresi dal resto dei compagni e testimoni di vite complicate. Mary Lou Finger ha sedici anni, la passione per la lettura e una vita incasinata, è bella ed è brava a scuola, ma non basta, a casa sua vive un inferno.

Tristan Colin, il ragazzo più sfigato della scuola, è chiuso in sé stesso da un vuoto incolmabile.

La vita di Mary Lou sembra davvero molto confusa, fino a quando un incontro inaspettato cambierà tutto il suo modo di vedere le cose. Sarà proprio li, alla Boy and Dolphin Fountain, in Hyde Park, che conoscerà Annabel, una ragazza di dodici anni, intelligente e spigliata, che dalla vita ha tutto, ma che sarà costretta a crescere troppo in fretta e ad affrontare qualcosa di molto più grande di lei.
