Mężczyzna na łożu śmierci wspomina historię najbardziej niesamowitej osoby, jaką poznał w życiu – genialnej sowieckiej lingwistki, którą nazywa Youriko.

To opowieść o miłości, brawurze, szpiegach i niebezpieczeństwie, a jej akcja dzieje się w Japonii, Niemczech, Turcji, USA, Kanadzie i Wielkiej Brytanii, lecz głównie w ZSRR lat 70. XX wieku.

A man on his deathbed recalls the story of the most extraordinary person he ever met — a brilliant Soviet linguist whom he calls Youriko. Shortly after the Second World War, two girls are born thousands of kilometres apart — one in Kazakhstan and the other in Japan. When they meet, they discover they are like two drops of water: identical in appearance, understanding each other like sisters, and staying in contact for the rest of their lives.

But their dreams pull them in opposite directions. One wants to help rebuild her war-scarred homeland, while the other longs to leave hers behind and escape to the West. Together, they devise a bold and dangerous plan to make both ambitions possible.
