Restauración

Restauración es la escalofriante historia de terror de una joven restauradora atrapada entre los recuerdos de una vieja casona de la Ciudad de México y los siniestros planes de un fotógrafo obsesionado con recrear los escenarios de la novela Farabeuf , de Salvador Elizondo. La novela lleva al extremo la idea del amor como sacrificio. En ella, el daño, el menosprecio y la crueldad se oponen al cuidado, la abnegación y la entrega absoluta, como parte de un complejo juego de seducción, dependencia emocional y autoengaño.

Mientras la protagonista se afana por recuperar la casa que perteneció a la familia del hombre a quien ama con la esperanza de salvar su relación, va develando los aterradores secretos que anticipan su propio destino. Como en el cuento clásico de Barba Azul , la protagonista abre una por una las habitaciones, dando vida a la memoria de la casa y a los fantasmas que la habitaron. Una estructura compleja, una prosa profunda y una tensión constante van conduciendo al lector hasta llegar ante la puerta de la habitación prohibida y ponen la llave en su mano.

En Restauración , las historias de dos generaciones se entrelazan para poner de manifiesto algunos de los conflictos que han vivido las mujeres en el pasado reciente, y confrontarlos con la actualidad. Al focalizar la narración en la perspectiva de las mujeres y hacer hincapié en su problemática, la novela cuestiona la manera en que la literatura ha silenciado, idealizado o invisibilizado al personaje femenino durante siglos.

Restauración is the chilling horror story of a young art restorer trapped between the memories of an old Mexico City mansion and the sinister plans of a photographer obsessed with recreating the scenes from Salvador Elizondo’s novel Farabeuf. The novel pushes to the extreme the idea of love as sacrifice. In it, harm, contempt, and cruelty are set against care, selflessness, and absolute devotion, as part of a complex game of seduction, emotional dependency, and self-deception.

While the protagonist struggles to restore the house that once belonged to the family of the man she loves — hoping to save their relationship — she gradually uncovers terrifying secrets that foreshadow her own fate. As in the classic tale of Bluebeard, the protagonist opens the rooms one by one, breathing life into the memory of the house and the ghosts that once inhabited it.

A complex structure, a profound prose style, and constant tension guide the reader all the way to the door of the forbidden room, placing the key in their hand. In Restauración, the stories of two generations intertwine to reveal some of the conflicts women have faced in the recent past, and to confront them with the present day.

By focusing the narrative on women’s perspectives and foregrounding their struggles, the novel calls into question the way literature has silenced, idealized, or rendered invisible the female character for centuries.
